An Important Etruscan Terra-cotta Head of a Youth, Late 4th-3rd Century BC
The Etruscans produced arguably the finest terra-cotta figures of any civilization of the ancient world. Certainly their life size and near life size portrait figures are without equal. These figures were placed in the tombs of the deceased though they were probably sculpted earlier from the living subject. This sensitive study of a handsome youth with tousled hair is an especially fine example of the portraiture of actual Etruscans. With his noble bearing he looks out at us across the centuries with a wistful sweetness that is deeply moving. We may still grieve for a beautiful life cut short.
