An Egyptian Cartonnage Panel, Ptolemaic Period, Circa 3rd Century BC




The ancient Egyptian goddess Isis who is the central figure of this panel was the sister wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. She was daughter of the earth (Keb) and the sky (Nut). After the murder of her husband brother Osiris, the tears she wept were believed to cause the annual inundation of the Nile.  Her worship became especially popular in the Ptolemaic period and even in Roman times numerous temples were dedicated to her in cities such as Rome, Pompeii and Ostia. 



This Cartonnage panel is the central part of a painted mummy wrapping. Winged figure of Isis at the center, Horus her son at upper left corner, Uraeus crown with sun disk and two cobras top center. Slight chipping to the paint. Comes framed. Dimensions: 35.1 x 36.6 cm. (13.8 x 14.4").
