A Roman Gold Ring with Carnelian Intagio of Athena, Circa 1st-2nd century AD

Athena was the goddess of wisdom as well as a protectress. Originally a Greek goddess, and the tutelary deity of Athens, the Romans later incorporated her into their pantheon as Minerva. A warrior goddess, she is invariably shown wearing a crested helmet as seen in this intaglio.

Unlike many Roman rings this one has a heavy band made of solid gold. Inset in the bezel is a polished reddish-orange carnelian finely carved in intaglio with the head of the goddess Athena facing left and wearing her crested Corinthian helmet. This ring is in an excellent state of preservation and is wearable with care. Mean Diameter: overall 19 mm. (0.75"), interior 16 x 12.5 mm. (0.63 x 0.49"). Note: Roman rings were often oval to fit the natural shape of the finger. Weight: 6.80 gm. (0.213 Troy oz.). Metal composition: Nearly pure gold. Price US$1,500. Status: Sold. Order #J007.
