A Rare Phoenician Gold Pin, Circa 10th-6th Century BC
The Phoenicians were one of the major maritime powers of the ancient world. From their wealthy ports on the Eastern Mediterranean coast in what is now Lebanon & northern Israel, they controlled much of that sea's trade and established colonies in Carthage and elsewhere as well as sending exploratory and trade expeditions along the Atlantic coasts of Africa and Europe. The Greeks of course obtained their alphabet from contact with the Phoenicians. Phoenician gold jewelry is quite rare and desirable. This pin dates from the early days of the Phoenician expansion.
This fine gold pin is an excellent example of early goldsmithing skills. It would have been used by a wealthy lady as an ornament or to pin together the folds of a light garment for wearing; the hole would have accommodated a fine cord to prevent its loss. This pin is in an excellent state of preservation and is wearable with care. Length: 33.5 mm. (1.32"). Weight: 2.28 gm. (0.071 Troy oz.). Metal composition: Pure solid gold. Provenance: From a European collection; said to have been found in the sea off the ancient Phoenician port of Tyre. Price US$1,500. Status: Available. Order #J029.
