B3712. THE CAPITOLINE VENUS. Sculpture in marble, Italian School, 19th century. Very fine copy of the Roman original with the nude goddess modestly shielding her breasts and sexual area with her hands, two finely sculpted little Cupids riding a dolphin at her left leg which replaces the vase and drapery of the original. See however the royal-athena galleries advertisement in Minerva 63 for a Roman marble original with Eros on a dolphin as in the present example. 31 inches. 58 lbs. Tips of two fingers lost which gives the piece the look of an original Roman piece (the royal-athena galleries example is missing the hands). A beautiful large piece of classical art of impressive size. The Capitoline Venus, which itself is based on the Aphrodite Cnidia of Praxiteles, is one of the most famous statues of antiquity. It now resides in the Capitoline Museum (#409), Rome.

Barzanti Florence'. 10 x 16.5 inches. 34 lbs. Patch to base of stand which can easily be turned out of sight to the rear. Barzanti is a listed artist whose marble sculptures have brought up to $23,000 at major auction houses.



B3714. LEONE CLERICI. Italian 19th century. BUST OF A YOUNG ROMAN EMPEROR PROBABLY THE YOUNG MARCUS AURELIUS. Sculpture in marble. Rome, 1887. Signed 'Clerici Roma 1887'. 10 x 16 inches. 29 lbs. Repair to stand with patch at rear. Cherici is a listed sculptor who specialized in busts and mythological subjects.



B3715. DANTE AND BEATRICE. Sculpture in marble, Unsigned by G. Pochini, Italian School, 19th century. Very finely sculpted bust of the famous poet with his refined aquiline nose in profile gazing longingly up at the beautiful young Beatrice who gazes wistfully out into space seemingly oblivious of his devotion. 5 x 12.75 x 16 inches. Repair to a couple of leaves in the wreaths, the tip of one restored. A beautiful piece of sculpture which captures the essence of this famous story of inspiration and unrequited love.



B3716. FLORA OR SPRING. Sculpture in marble, ca. late 19th-early 20th century. Very finely sculpted marble statue of a beautiful young maiden walking with shy downcast eyes, a wreath of flowers around her thighs, her light dress billowing gracefully as she walks. 24.5 inches. 30 lbs. Right arm lost from middle of forearm down but this is hidden and it displays beautifully when turned to the left. Very inexpensive for this quality due to the loss.



B3717. GIRL AND CRAB, ca. late 19th-early 20th century. Sculpture in marble. Beautifully composed and carved female nude twisting her body away from a crab below. 13.5 inches. Old tag on bottom references a sale in 1932.



B3718. GREEK BOY REMOVING A THORN FROM HIS FOOT, ca. late 19th-early 20th century. Sculpture in marble. Signed Pipp. Nicely carved after the famous ancient Greek original. 10.5 inches. Excellent condition. Old tag on bottom references a sale in 1932.



B3719. THE BRONZE FAUN, AFTER THE ORIGINAL FOUND AT POMPEII. The powerfully muscled faun dancing with hands raised, his goat's horns emerging from his bushy hair and his goat's tail behind. 32 inches. 34 lbs. The famous original was found at Pompeii in The House Of The Faun, one of the richest houses in the city and which takes its name from this piece. It was the centerpiece of the large garden. A copy similar to this now stands in its place, the original resides in the National Museum in Naples. A fine large classical piece full of vitality with excellent detail especially in the face and hair.



B3720. YOUNG SATYR WITH WINESKIN, AFTER THE ORIGINAL FOUND AT HERCULANEUM, 19th or early 20th century Italian copy. The nude young satyr in a pose which vividly reveals the powerful muscularity of his athletic young body as he pours wine from a wineskin. 21 inches. 23 lbs. On marble base. The original marble sculpture was a companion piece to the "Drunken Hercules" found at Herculaneum in the House of Stags. An almost identical bronze version of the satyr was found in Pompeii.



B3721. MERCURY AFTER GIOVANNI BOLOGNA 16TH CENTURY. Sculpture in bronze. European, prob. Italian foundry, ca. late 19th century. One of the most famous and widely copied of all sculpture, but rarely in this quality, with every rippling muscle of the nude god sensuously and finely rendered as he flies through the air in his winged hat and sandals, borne on the winds which issue from the mouth of the god of winds. 24.5 inches on marble base. 17 lbs.



B3722. LE JOUR, by DeBois. Sculpture in bronze. France, late 19th-early 20th century. The 'Day' represented by a finely sculpted running nude twisting her voluptuous body to look back at a cherub who follows her scattering flowers. 20 inches. 28 lbs. choice condition on marble base. Signed DeBois France in the bronze and with a brass plate further providing the title. Wonderful sensual composition.



B3723. WINGED VICTORY, by Eichberg, 1890. Sculpture in bronze. Gracefully portrayal of the nearly nude classical winged goddess of victory advancing forward holding a wreath in her right hand, a rose in her left. 8.75 inches, 12 inches on marble base. Tiny crimp in tip of one feather, small flake on edge of marble base. Wonderful detail and modeling for a smaller piece. Signed Eichberg 90.

Excellent composition and color scheme after the 1850 painting 'Young Man Beside The Sea' by Flandrin. The original is the Louvre, Paris.

B3732. ROBERT McGUIRE. American, 20th century. BOLD SURRENDER. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. 19.5 by 29.5 inches professionally framed as shown with rear covered. A beautiful original art work by this famous illustrator for romance novels. This is the actual painting that was used for the book cover for Bold Surrender by Judith E. French (Avon Publishers 1988), a copy of which is included with the painting. Maguire is a well-known and highly respected illustrator who has been employed by virtually every major publisher in New York City for nearly 30 years. Maguire's fine art, which includes many paintings of Westerns, have been exhibited in many well-known galleries across the country, including the Grand Central, NY and the O'Brian in Scottsdale AZ. Robert Maguire carries on the tradition of other great illustrators past and present, who have proven to art enthusiasts that paintings created for reproduction may well be some of the finest examples of American art our culture has to offer. B3741. A LARGE CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING OF A WARRIOR, ca. mid 20th century. Vigorous painting of warrior with large sword, line of calligraphy at right, 3 red seals. 27 x 53 inches. Comes with xeroxed certificate and information sheet in Chinese. Most probably by a known Chinese artist due to the excellent Zen-like style.

Original illustration art for Swingle Magazine, 12-5 (Dec. 1975), pg. 13. A wonderful erotically charged work which masterfully evokes the lonely atmosphere of a midwestern American city at night. Schroeder produced many fine illustrations for Parliament Publishing and American Art Agency/Enterprise. His works are very rare and highly collectible as most were destroyed after use.

Very nice condition throughout with a few fine neat early handwritten annotations in Latin. The famous codification of Roman law written by the Byzantine emperor Justinian which was begun in 528 AD and published and enacted into law in 533. Rare early edition.



B3746. EPICTETI ENCHIRIDIUM CEBETIS THEBANI TABULA, 1723. 1.5 x 5 x 8 inches. 288 pgs. Engraved frontispiece and folding plate, engraved chapter headers and initials. Titlepage printed in red and black. Gold stamped vellum armorial binding. Sound and tight in generally nice condition, dampstains in lower corner throughout. Works by the famous Stoic philosopher Epictetus printed in Greek and Latin side by side.

Dissertation on ancient coins of Smyrna with medical motifs in honor of Harvey. 56 pages, 3 plates of coin engravings, other decorative engravings in text. Soft marbled binding, the pages in nice condition but the binding weak with a little interior splitting. 7 x 9.25 inches. Great for a doctor with an interest in ancient numismatics.



B3748. AN A.W. RIDGEWAY & SON STONEWARE PITCHER, 1840. With very crip molded decoration of detailed jousting knights within floral borders. With original pewter lid. 10". Scarce.



B3749. NANTAN IRON METEORITE. China, Lihu town, Ladan/Bayan area, 1516 AD. Coarse octohedrite meteorite, 92.5% Fe, 6.96% Ni. 1.5 x 3.25 x 5.3 inches. Approx. 2 lbs. This fall is recorded in Chinese archives in Nantan as follows: "Zengde 11th year (1516 AD), summertime in May, stars fell down from a northwest direction, five or six-fold long, waving like snakes and dragons, bright like lightning, then they disappeared in seconds." The remains of this meteorite were discovered in 1958. A rare example of a documented very early meteorite fall. Comes with information sheet.



B3750. AN ESPECIALLY LARGE WOOLY MAMMOTH TOOTH, ca. 25,000-10,000 years BP. Found in the Verdigris River, Oklahoma in the 50's along with other remains. 4 x 8.5 x 10.5 inches. 13 lbs. Some professionally stablized age cracks. Very rare this large.
