A lovely fine and graceful red glazed vessel on low ring foot with amphora shaped body, slender neck and two fine handles with molded flowers. The shoulders decorated with a molded gazelle and lion, the sides with four panels delineated by floral columns containing two scenes of chariots, a maiden carrying a tray leading a small child and another maiden carrying a basket of fruits and a filleted scepter?, all the molded reliefs done in choice style and in most respects sharp and clear. 3.5 x 5.2 inches. The scene on the discus depicting a large warrior or gladiator wearing Corinthian style helmet, body armour and greaves apparently clasping the body of what appears to be a youth of smaller stature, bare headed and wearing a close fitting belted garment which leaves the legs bare, the scene framed by a border of grapes. 5058. A ORNAMENTED MILITARY BRONZE ARMOUR SHEET, showing Mars (his helmed bust to left) beneath a tree with a Jupiter eagle on top. The sheet was the part of the breast-fastening of the body armour (position was the shoulder part of the breast). This extremly rare part of a legionary body armour has a nice green patina. This 'later' type tile (Latin terminology for this type of quadrangular tile) is stamped with the legionary mark: LEG XIIII GMVI (Legio XIIII Legio Martia Victrix) and was found in Carnuntum. 1st century A.C., red clay. 20 cm x 19 cm. the Legi XIIII was founded by Augustus and was first stationed in Mogontiacum. 5070. A VERY RARE ROMAN CONSECRATION ALTAR, used to make sacrifices to SILVANUS, the god of the woods and the land houses, called Villa Rustica. He let prosperous grow the vine, grass and fruit-trees, but also the cattles. Every house and piece of land had is own Silvanus Domesticus (see inscription). 32 cm x 20 cm, white sandstone. Small damage at the left top, two letters interferred, but readable. Found in the area of a Villa Rustica near Mainz. Reference: Phlilip Filtzinger, Hic saxa loquuntur, page 243.
