5292. AN ARCHAIC GREEK KYLIX WITH INSCRIPTION, ca. 6th century BC. The two handled wine cup on pedestal base with CER incised in the black glaze of the tondo. Though at first glance this inscription might appear to be Latin rather than Greek, if one refers to a reference on Greek Epigraphy such as 'Reading The Past, Greek Inscriptions' by B. F. Cook, pg. 8,Table 1, one finds a listing of Greek Archaic alphabets in which it is clear that C was an Archaic form of gamma, and R of rho in various early Greek alphabets but that the two were used together only in the Corinthian. This is consistent with the origin of this kylix which comes from near Syracuse in Sicily which was of course founded as a colony of Corinth. Microscopic examination of the incisions also reveals no fresh edges, and deposits consistent with those on the rest of the surface. Now that it can be read as GER it most probably stands for GERAS, meaning 'gift' or 'in honor of'. Thus it might have been used in a libation to the Gods or perhaps as GERAS QANWNTAN, a gift in honor of the dead. 3 x 7 inches across handles. Intact and in excellent condition. A very rare and interesting early piece with inscription. $1750 estimate.

The hemispherical bowl with molded ornamentation including a procession of eight fabulous long-necked winged felines framed by bands of lines and dots, the base with a finely detailed acanthus leaf rosette with amphorae between the leaves, the vessel covered with a rich reddish brown glaze. 4 x 6 inches. Very precisely repaired from large shards. The Megarian bowls were the Greek precursors of the later Roman Arretine and terra sigillata vessels which also carried molded ornamentation, however the Megarian bowls are considerably rarer. $5000 estimate.
