SNG BMC Black Sea -; Pick, AMNG 407. EF, (slabbed and graded AU-50 by ICG) with extraordinary obverse and reverse dies (best in the series!) on a huge flan. Heads and eagle are nicely centered on an attractive irregular flan that is unusually heavy, weighing almost 1½ grams more than the typical specimen. The identification of the male heads on the obverse is not certain, though the Dioscuri are probable candidates. The Greek word Dioskouroi means "Sons of Zeus." Dios, is the genitive of Zeus and kouroi is the plural of kouros, meaning boy or son. The Romans referred to them as the Dioscuri. The Dioscuri are the two twin sons of Jupiter (Zeus) and Leda, and their names are Castor and Pollux. Because Zeus came to Leda in the form of a swan, they are sometimes presented as having been born from an egg. Pollux was a formidable boxer, and Castor was a great horseman. Together, they were the "Heavenly Twins," often associated with the constellation Gemini. An exceptional sharp and finely styled example. $1650 estimate.
