8879. SIGNED ALABASTER BUST OF A MAIDEN. Antonio Frilli, Florence, Italy, 19th century. Rich honey colored alabaster bust of a maiden crowned with laurel leaves, she gazes upward in a beautiful expression of spiritual ecstasy. Originally had a small bronze plaque under the swirl of drapery which no doubt identified the subject but this is now missing. It is not broken there. Intact. Signed on back 'A. Frilli, Firenze', a well known and listed artist whose pieces reside in major museums. 10 x 10 x 6 inches. $3500 estimate.

Fine black porcelain Dionysian figure of a handsome nude youth with goat ears playing the pipes and leaning against a pedestal over which is draped a panther skin. Wonderfully carved bust of Joan of Arc in the classic pose, wearing her French peasant girl’s garments, head turned to the left with eyes raised to Heaven as she hears God calling her to rise up and save France. Her impassioned but sensitive and innocent nature exceptionally rendered by the artist who captures it perfectly! JEANNE D’ARC carved on the front of base, signed Prof. G. Besfi on verso. 8417. LARGE SIGNED ART NOUVEAU DANCER, c. 1890’s. The piece titled DANSE ESPAGNOLE on brass plate attached to front, base signed Linst? Seger or Segez? (Artist name appreciated). A Buxom Spanish dancer with head thrown back, her gown clasped with a butterfly brooch revealing her ample breasts, playing castanets with her outstretched hands. Tip of r. thumb chipped, tiny scrape, otherwise excellent condition. 7 x 16 x 30.5 inches. Almost certainly manufactured by the Casper Hennecke Co., Milwaukee, WI., a premier American manufacturer of Art Noveau figures. $2500 estimate.

8418. FINE CLASSICAL BRONZE SCULPTURE OF HORACE. French, 19th century. 11 x 16.5 x 9 inches. 26 lbs. The great Roman poet depicted clothed in toga and wearing the poet’s laurel crown, seated on a curule chair with pen and scroll on which is written “DEL ART / CHAMPETRE / HEUREUX QUI / DE SES MAINS / COMME NOS / PREMIERS PERES / CULTIVE EN PAIX / SES CHAMPS ET / VIT LIBRE / D’AFFAIRES. ORACE / ART” which roughly translates as: “Led happy pastoral art, which with their own hands our fore fathers cultivated their fields in peace and saw freedom in their affairs. Horace”. Stamped 3876 on back of base. Choice classical bronze with great detail even down to wolf heads ornamenting his sandals. Excellent condition save for a few minor flaws in the patina. Sculptor identification appreciated. $8500 estimate.

8419. FINE MARBLE BUST OF KING LOUIS XVI OF FRANCE, 18th-19th century. 10 x 14.5 x 5.5 inches. 26 lbs. Louis XVI (1754-1793) was king of France from 1774 to 1792. He failed to understand the revolutionary forces at work in France. His extravagant queen, Marie Antoinette, opposed the necessary reforms and thus contributed to the fall of the monarchy. On August 10, 1792 the French revolutionists stormed the royal palace. The royal family escaped to the Legislative Assembly, which suspended Louis XVI from office and ordered the imprisonment of the king and his family. Louis XVI was brought to trial and sentenced to death for conspiring with foreign countries for the invasion of France. The following day he was beheaded by guillotine. A fine sculpture of the king with his distinctive high hooked nose which is seen to advantage on his coinage profile. Choice condition bust of this famous historical figure. $4750 estimate.
