9698. A MUSEUM QUALITY ROMAN OIL LAMP, ca. 1st–2nd century AD. The terracotta lamp of circular form with volute spout, the discus ornamented with a scene depicting the myth of Leda and the swan. Leda, nude, stg. l. facing the huge spread-winged swan whose tail is visible between her thighs, nude Eros at the right assisting the swan, the egg resulting from their union visible at lower right. 3.8 inches. According to the myth, Zeus made love to Leda in the form of a swan. From this union was produced an egg from which Helen of Troy was born. A superb specimen of Classical erotic art, of the finest style. By far the best example I've carried and worthy of the finest collection. $15,000 estimate.

Beautifully illustrated and scholarly early work on Herculaneum. With five appendices inc. passages from ancient authors referring to Herculaneum. The city was destroyed in the eruption of Mt. A lovely fine and graceful red glazed vessel on low ring foot with amphora shaped body, slender neck and two fine handles with molded flowers. The shoulders decorated with a molded gazelle and lion, the sides with four panels delineated by floral columns containing two scenes of chariots, a maiden carrying a tray leading a small child and another maiden carrying a basket of fruits and a filleted scepter?, all the molded reliefs done in choice style and in most respects sharp and clear. 3.5 x 5.2 inches. The scene on the discus depicting a large warrior or gladiator wearing Corinthian style helmet, body armour and greaves apparently clasping the body of what appears to be a youth of smaller stature, bare headed and wearing a close fitting belted garment which leaves the legs bare, the scene framed by a border of grapes. The scene is uncertain, possibly depicting a myth, possibly two companions who fell together in battle. 11.5 cm. Hole in discus not affecting figures and repair near handle, line under spout. If the date refers to the Actian Era which began in 31 BC, the year of the defeat of Marc Antony and Cleopatra at Actium, the date of this stele would be 305 AD, however the use of sigmas rather than Roman C's probably indicates an earlier date and era. This stele may have been erected to celebrate the induction of Aurelia Marina as a priestess. 18 x 34 x 3 inches. 9736. A GRAECO-ROMAN MARBLE STELE WITH CARVED PRIESTESS, ca. 2nd century BC/AD. With the full length figure of a priestess standing within a temple with a carved crescent moon on the pediment above her. She wears a veil over her hair and a long inner robe which falls down over her feet and an outer gown worn over one shoulder, she raises one hand apparently addressing the god. One line of Greek inscription above her MHTRI MOTULA HMH (for the mother) and two or three below APF(I?)(u)… /…APA / HIQRH??uuu?-HTO. The second partial line is to the right and above the third line and may be the third line's ending as otherwise it seems rather out of place and isolated. 17.5 x 32.5 x up to 4.5 inches. In three closely fitting sections which can be invisibly rejoined and a custom stand made if the purchaser so desires. Extremely rare. $45,000 estimate.

9737. A PARTIAL LIFE SIZE ROMAN BRONZE FOOT, ca. 1st-3rd century AD. The foot broken from a large life size bronze statue of a male God or emperor. The five toes clearly modeled with the nails, the hem of a long robe visible above them. The underside made hollow (indicating that the statue was seated and the feet did not bear its weight), an ancient patinated rectangular patch visible at the join of the two outer toes. 4.5 x 5 x 2.5 inches. Excellent sea green patina throughout. Extremely rare fragment of a life size bronze statue from antiquity. $4500 estimate.

9741. A UNUSUAL ROMAN OIL LAMP, ca. 1st-3rd century AD. The large lamp with a left facing robed bust and large headdress surmounted by crescent, a laurel wreath around. 4.5 inches. Intact. One might assume the bust was that of Isis or the moon Goddess, Selene, however it appears to be male with a rather pointed beard and turban like headdress. Certainly a rare and intriguing piece deserving of further study. Any thoughts appreciated. $1950 estimate.
