A263: A CHOICE CAVE BEAR SKULL. Ursus spelaeus, Pleistocene, ca. 60,000 years. An exceptionally large and complete skull with the mandible displaying a full battery of teeth including the canines. The cave bear was the largest of all bears and perhaps the most formidible of the ice-age megafauna faced by early humans.
Paeleolithic man certainly feared and apparently worshipped them as such skulls have been found on stone altars in paleolithic caves such as Chauvet in the Ardeche. 20 inches. Complete and intact.
