5213. AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE MESOSAUR SKELETON. Mesosaurus brasiliensis. Permian, Brazil. The Mesosaurs were fast swimming predators which lived in fresh water, probably preying on small fish, insects and other aquatic invertebrates. They are found in Permian rocks in Brazil and South Africa, indicating that these two continents were joined at the time. The fossil measuring 18 inches in a 12 x 21 inch, 20 lb. matrix. Great detail with teeth and all digits showing. Some restoration to bones as usual. The skeletons normally found and available on the market are only 12 –16 inches long and normally bring $2000-$3000, however this one measures an amazing 29.5 inches along the backbone! $6000 estimate.
