B2524. HALF OF A LARGER BYZANTINE RELIQUARY CROSS, ca. 10th-12th century. The cross with Christ crucified, IC XC NIKA inscribed below his arms, a smaller cross in his halo and another above the top of the large cross, two saints with halos beyond his outstretched hands. 2.2 x 2.8 inches. The gray stone vessel of octagonal cross section with cylindrical interior and four abuttments on the quadrants with drilled holes probably to receive a lid, the exterior surface with numerous incised annular designs. 2.5 x 3.5 inches. One side with some lime encrustation. Excellent condition and very rare. $1350---Reserve $950.
