11463. RARE BUDDHIST DHARMA DRUMMER SPIRIT. Gandhara, 1st-2nd century AD. 13 h x 6.25 w x 5 d inches. Depicted as a goat-eared torso emerging from a winged architectural ornament beating a drum on his shoulder. Carved in grey shist. Considerably better than photo. On custom stand. Another view.

Provenance: A private New Jersey collection.

The Dharma Drummer beats his drum to call Buddhists to prayer and meditation. There is also a modern Zen Buddhist sect by that name.

The stone pallet in the form of a lotus blossom with carved detail both sides, the top with chambers to hold cosmetics, a deity in the fifth. 6.2 inches diameter. 9812. GANDHARA CARVED SCHIST STELE, ca. 2nd-3rd century AD. The stele in the form of a temple with a scene from the life of Buddha who is standing surrounded by seven other figures within the main temple alcove. He is also shown seated in meditation in the frieze above surrounded by four supplicants, two of whom give offerings while the others bow in supplication. 2.25 x 9.75 x 11.5 inches. Excellent nearly complete piece with detailed carving and only a small side of the frieze missing. Considerably better than photo. THE FOOTPRINTS OF BUDDHA

9139. A GANDHARA CARVED GREEN SCHIST STONE BUDDHAPADA FRIEZE WITH THE FOOTPRINTS OF BUDDHA, ca. 1st-2nd century AD. The frieze of square form, carved in sunken relief with the footprints of Buddha, a stylized lotus incised on the soles, and the character 'Om' in each toe impression. 10 x 12.5 inches, 17 lbs. Before actual representations of Buddha were made, auspicious symbols, such as the wheel, bodhi tree, stupa, and footprints such as these were worshipped in their place. Footprints symbolize not only the physical presence of Buddha, but also his spiritual domination. Immediately after his birth Buddha took seven steps over the earth, thus indicating his divine nature. Cf. Pal, Light of Asia, p. 135, no. 67. See also Sotheby's, Indian and Southeast Asian Art, 3/20/97 lot 36 for a nearly identical unbroken example which sold for $51,750. Very rare. On custom stand.
