THE ORIGINAL DOLLAR!

11520. INTACT HORDE OF 24 LION DOLLARS. Netherlands, early 1600's. A newly discovered intact horde of 24 Dutch Lion daalders. Struck for overseas trade at the height of the early Dutch overseas trading empire these lion dollars were circulated worldwide and became the standard trade currency of the day. 40-42 mm. Average weight a little under 27 grams. The Dutch word 'daalder', the denomination of these crown and thaler sized coins, is the origin of our word 'dollar', the denomination chosen by the founding fathers for the early coinage of the United States. A choice example of a probably historical coin with better detail than the Spengler/Sayles plate coin.

PROVENANCE TO 1880

8180. ENGLAND, GEORGE III, 1787. Gold Guinea. Bust r./Shield of arms. VF. Suspension loop soldered to top. Purchased in Scotland in 1880 as a love token for the ancestor of the current consignor. Of considerable historic significance as George III is of course the English monarch who lost the American colonies in the Revolutionary War. Would make a great pendant! Old provenance.

8642. ARTUQUIDS OF MARDIN, NASIR AL-DIN ARTUQ ARSLAN?, 1201-1239 AD. AE Dirhem, Spengler/Sayles 39&45 variant? Male figure riding lion l./Legend. Good VF. While this coin is quite similar to the Spengler/Sayles types, the position of the rider's head is quite different. Also Spengler/Sayles describes the beast as a leopard while the heavy mane of a lion is clearly visible in the current example, if the same type this would cast considerable doubt on their interpretation of the symbolism. Perhaps a rare variant or a new type. Additional information appreciated. Rare?

FIRST COIN IN THE WORLD WITH A CHRISTIAN CROSS

Crowned and draped bust right, holding stick or scepter; grain ears flanking, legend divided by 2 Christian crosses around. / Draped bust right, wearing head cloth, holding branch; grain ears flanking, legend divided by Christian cross around. Hahn, Aksumite 21a; Munro-Hay type 47; BMC Axum 74 corr. (photos for 74 and 75 switched). VF. Rare this nice.

Located directly south of Egypt in modern Ethiopia, Axum became the first Christian kingdom in Africa when King Ezanas converted around 356 AD and began using the Christian cross on his coinage. In fact these coins are the first time a Christian cross had ever appeared on a coin and are among the earliest appearances of the cross as a Christian symbol. The fish and the Chi Rho were used previously. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims to possess the Ark of the Covenant, or Tabot, in Axum. The object is currently kept under guard in a treasury near the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion and is used occasionally in ritual processions. Replicas of the Axum tabot are kept in every Ethiopian church, each with its own dedication to a particular saint, the most popular of these include Mary, George and Michael.
