Robert Sarsony is a well known American artist and lithographer currently residing in North Carolina. He began exhibiting in local shows in New Jersey in 1963. The following year he made his New York debut in a group show at Allied Artists. From 1969 until about 1974 he did a series of paintings based on book and magazine illustrations - "Pop antiques," he calls them - from the 1920's through the 1940's. Subjects ranged from silent movie photographs and pictures of important historical events to reproductions taken from period children's books. In the corners of his canvases Sarsony often paints small images copied from cards found in cigarette packages and cereal boxes during the first half of this century. In doing so he follows in the steps of the nineteenth-century trompe l'oeil artists who depicted visiting cards that looked as though they were tucked under the edges of their paintings' frames. More recently Sarsony has portrayed figure and landscape subjects with an attention to light effects that gives his canvases an impressionistic air. More information is available at RobertSarsony.com.

Provenance: A private American collection. Acquired at auction, c. early 2000.

IMPORTANT PORTRAIT OF J.P. MORGAN'S PARTNER

7575. JOHN H. HARJES, by FEDOR ENCKE. Portrait in oil, signed and dated Paris 1902. Harjes is portrayed seated at ease in a red velvet chair, his wavy white hair and heavy sideburns framing his intelligent alert face above his black banker's suit and tie. Dimensions; 48 x 60 inches in the original ornate gilt frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition original condition with no repair or restoration.

This is the companion portrait to Fedor Encke's famous portrait of J.P. Morgan painted at the same time. The two banking giants both had Encke paint their portraits at that time. Morgan's portrait was the one Encke was painting when the young Edward Steichen, at Encke's request to minimize sitting time, interrupted to take his iconic and controversial photograph of Morgan. An important historical painting in excellent condition which perfectly captures the spirit of fin de siecle opulence and financial power and which would be at home in a major museum or financial institution.

John H. Harjes, 1830-1914, was a prominent banker and the partner of J.P. Morgan and founder of the Morgan-Harjes Bank of Paris. He was the father of Henry H. Harjes, later banker and senior partner of the same bank who played a significant role behind the scenes in World War I by negotiating sizable loans for the Allies and by his major role in organizing relief work. Additional biographical material on Harjes can be found here.

Fedor Encke, German, 1851-1926, was a famous turn of the century artist specializing in portraits of the rich and famous. His works reside in a number of major museums in Europe and the United States and are featured in sales by top auction houses.

Provenance: A private North Eastern collection. Acquired at Berman's Auction House, NJ, May, 1998.

RARE NEARLY COMPLETE OVIRAPTOR NEST

8073. EIGHT EGG OVIRAPTOR NEST. c. 70 million years BP. This nest belongs to Oviraptor, one of the most famous dinosaurs since its featured appearance in the film Jurassic Park. The name Oviraptor means egg robber and when first found near nests they were thought to have died trying to eat the eggs. However an amazing discovery in 1995 of a near complete Oviraptor actually sitting on a nest proved the Oviraptor was actually brooding the eggs. Embryonic bones found in some of these black eggs also confirmed they were Oviraptor young. Oviraptors were about 8 feet long, had a toothless beak and were one of the most bird-like of non-avian theropods. This museum quality, 8-egg nest comes from the Nanxiang Basin, Guandong Province of China and is about 70 million years old. All of the eggs display their original unhatched shape, as well as 50%-80% of their original black shell with the surface texture typical of raptor eggs. As this nest beautifully displays, the eggs were laid side by side in two layers. The 7 inch long eggs remain in their original 18 x 10 inch red sandstone matrix. An important opportunity to acquire a museum-quality clutch of dinosaur eggs. Individual Oviraptor eggs sell for $1,000 or more and nests are much much rarer. Weight of the nest is 47 pounds.

Provenance: A private American collection. Acquired at the Franklin Rock and Mineral show September, 2004. Originally from Guandong Province, China.

KING DAVID AND THE PSALMS

7969. OLD MASTER PAINTING OF KING DAVID AND THE PSALMS. French, c. 17th-19th century, oil on canvas, Unframed, 10.5 x 10.5 inches. In a circular frame bordered with gold (indicating a halo) sits King David, author of the Psalms, dressed in robes with outstretched hand holding a banner on which is written a quote from Psalm 8. ELEVATA E(st) MAGNIFICETIA (the line over the ET indicating a contraction of MAGNIFICENTIA) TVA SVP (the P with a line through the stem indicating a contraction of SVPER) CELOS DS (the line over the S indicatig a contraction of DEVS (God)). The line from Psalm 8 reads in its entirety "Domine Dominus noster quam admirabile est nomen tuum in universa terra quoniam elevata est magnificentia tua super caelos". "O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your glory above (upon) the heavens!" Actually the exact source of the quote as it appears on the banner ending with ëdevsí appears to be from Aquinas' "Summa contra gentiles", where it appears in this passage: Caput XXVII Quod Deus non sit forma alicuius corporis. Also in Aquinas "Expositio super Isaiam ad litteram" Cap. LIII, beginning with "quoniam". The quote also appears in the Corpus Antiphonarum Italicum: Elevata est magnificentia tua super caelos deus alleluia 2634 CGBEMVHRDFSLrwlsP Elevata est magnificentia tua super caelos deus alleluia alleluia 2634 [ROM]. Several inscriptions in black ink on the verso: ëREMIE RUGIN NANTES (France)î, ëPor E( )uginí, several other inscriptions faded or obscured by the frame. Also printed on the verso but partially obscured by the frame is ëManas( ) Papelerie/ (Ö.TIN) /No. 5í presumably refering to the Canvas maker or framer. Small tear on letter C stabilized with wax on the verso, otherwise excellent condition with bright colors and no repainting. A fine example of an Old Master painting.

8082. FINE FRENCH BRONZE OF AUZOUX BY DANTAN, 1844. An excellent bust of the noted French physican Auzoux by the important French sculptor Antoine L. Dantan (1798-1878). 4.5 x 8 inches. Excellent condition. Louis Thomas JerÙme Auzoux (1797-1880), a French physician, improved and popularized anatomical models as a method of teaching anatomy. As a medical student in the early 19th century, Auzoux found it difficult to study anatomy when the human cadavers he was dissecting deteriorated rapidly. He began creating anatomical models, inspired by papier-m‚chÈ dolls, boxes, and other household items then popular in Europe. In doing so, he transformed the way physicians studied anatomy in the Victorian era. Auzoux's models quickly became popular for teaching anatomy across the world. Auzoux began experimenting with materials and methods of constructing flexible models at the age of 19. His attention was drawn to the quality of the materials used in making toy puppets sold on the streets of Paris. He succeeded in compounding a paper paste that was flexible and, when hardened, solid, supple, light, and unbreakable. The special features of Auzoux's models that made them easy to study were their ability to be taken apart and reassembled and their detailed system of anatomical markers. In 1822, the same year Auzoux received his medical degree, he presented his first complete anatomical male figure to the Paris Academy of Medicine, receiving a commendation for his work. This favorable reception launched Auzoux's career as a model maker. Five years later, he opened a factory to manufacture human, veterinary, and botanical models In 1830 he introduced a model of a complete man six feet tall that contained 129 major pieces and 1115 numbered details, but that was very expensive to produce. Under pressure to reduce cost, he compromised and produced a half-sized model three-and-a-half feet tall by 1839. Auzoux's models eventually were exported to many medical schools and institutions. Auzoux called these models, that could be taken to pieces and reassembled, Anatomie clastique (from the Greek Klastos: broken in pieces). "...in one single course, with the help of the Anatomie clastique, we will show you the organs and their functions. Our descriptions will be short; we will place the organ itself before your eyes, and better than with anything that we could say, you will thus appreciate the situation, the form, the colour and the connections." (LeÁons ÈlÈmentaires d'anatomie et de physiologie, Paris 1839). A fine early French bronze of an important figure in medical history.

PAL FRIED

7866. PAL FRIED, 1893-1976. NUDE PORTRAIT OF EVA. Oil on canvas, signed lower left. 24 x 30 inches. The model is Eva who was Fried's wife and a frequent model. Recorded: Benezit, Emmanuel. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs. (Paris: Librairie Grund, 1999). Excellent condition. Provenance: Purchased by the present owner at an upscale New Jersey estate auction in 2001. This painting came from the Haussner's Gentleman's Club in the Cleveland area in the 1950's. It was taken down when women were admitted.

Pal Fried, (1893-1976) was a Hungarian American artist. Born in Budapest, he studied at the Hungarian Academy under Professor Hugo Pohl and in Paris under Claude Monet and Lucien Simone. In 1947, after WW II, Fried emigrated to America where he taught at the Academy of Arts in New York and developed his own unique style. In the 1950's and 60's, Pal Fried lived and painted in Hollywood and painted high society women and celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and the Gabor sisters. In New York, he painted portraits of Herbert Lehman, Governor and Senator from New York, Will Rogers and other notables. He is known for being an important figure painter, and most often depicted beautiful young women, nudes, ballerinas, Parisian society women, western scenes, horse racing, and an occasional seascape. His artwork has gained much deserved recognition and notoriety and has become highly collectible. Pal Fried died in New York City at his home on March 6, 1976, at the age of 82. Pal Fried always signed his paintings "FRIED PAL" even though his family name was Fried. While traveling in Spain and Africa, Fried widened and enriched his palette, which gave him mastery of light and movement. After returning to Paris, Fried concentrated on portraiture in which he also became a recognized master. He exhibited his work in M¸¸csarnok in Budapest. Many of his paintings hung in the famed Haussner Restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. Pal Fried died in New York City at his home, 1737 York Avenue, on March 6, 1976, at the age of 82. He died only four days after the death of his beloved wife, Eva who is the subject of this painting. Eva was the model for many of Pal Fried's paintings and he painted several versions of this pose.

From the Baltimore City Paper: Nostalgia is a mighty thing, the Nose thought as we fell in with the throng thronging to Richard Opfer Auctioneering in Timonium for the Dec. 18 sale of the Haussner Collection. Haussner's, the restaurant, is dead; there's no more antelope leg or strawberry soup to be had. But Haussner's, the idea, keeps going. More than a thousand people put down a $250 deposit just to crowd into the auction house and have a try at 500 items' worth of Frances Wilke Haussner's art and other holdings. It was a banner day for Fried Pal, the artist behind the voluptuous pinup girls of the restaurant's Stag Bar. One bare-bottomed figure in a corset went for $15,000; standing in front of the Nose, Joe Werner of Towson spent $4,000 on another busty Pal pastel. He reminisced about passing through the bar's pneumatic, pink-nippled nudes as a young boy en route to the men's rest room. "The Haussner's bar introduced me to the realization that men and women were different," he said.
