9444. Q. CASSIUS LONGINUS VOTING REVERSE, ca. 55 BC. AR Denarius, Cassia 8. Hd. Liberty r./Curule chair within circular temple of Vesta between urn and voting tablet inscribed AC (Absolvo Condemno). VF+. Scarce. This coin refers to the investigation held in 113 BC over which an ancestor of the moneyer presided, into certain cases of incest, because the pontiffs were thought to have improperly acquitted two vestal virgins, while they condemned one.

Crawford 23/1; Sydenham 30; Kestner -; BMCRR Romano-Campanian 5. Good VF, brown and olive patina, minor roughness. Extremely rare.

Crawford assigned this issue to Sicily in the early stages of the First Punic War, based on the provenance of extant specimens and the similarity of style and weight to contemporary Mamertine issues. It was the decision to intervene on behalf of the Mamertini that sparked Rome's first war with Carthage. An important historical coin.
